Checklist while planning a product shoot for your business

A product photo shoot is a powerful tool to showcase your offerings and elevate your brand image. With so many moving parts involved, creating something worthwhile begins with planning the shoot. Go through this checklist for every important step, from transforming your vision to creating stunning visuals.

 Pre-Production:

  • Define your goals: What story is to be told with your photos? How will they be used? Website, social media, advertising? Having a clear vision ensures all creative decisions stay on point.

  • Know your product inside out; it's all about its best features and benefits.

  • Target Audience: Tailor your shoot's aesthetic to what will work for your ideal customer. Research what they like and what kind of imagery will grab their attention.

  • Mood Board Inspiration: This involves the gathering of images, color palettes, and reference material that can best show others. In a way, it represents a means of visual briefing for everyone involved.

  • Location Scouting: Go for an appropriate backdrop that corresponds to your product and brand personality. You can shoot in a studio or find unique outdoor locations to get better control over lighting.

Production:

  • Put together the team: a photographer, a stylist, a property master, and hair and makeup if needed. Let each member know how they will be involved in it.

  • Shot List and Storyboard: A detailed list of all the photos you want to capture, including variations and close-ups. The storyboard is a visual representation of how your shots will unwind.

  • Lighting Setup: Experiment with different modes of light. Natural light, strobes from the studio—softboxes which will show changes in the mood.

  • Product Prep: Make sure your product is clean, polished, and ready for its close-up. Consider minor adjustments to enhance its visual appeal.

Post-Production:

  • Photo Selection and Editing: Choose the best shots that align with your vision. Basic editing can enhance lighting, color correction, and minor touch-ups.

  • Usage Rights and Storage: Finalize usage rights with photographers and stylists. Establish a clear storage system for your digital assets, categorized for access.

PS: Make sure you give yourself some time to think outside the box! Welcome spontaneity, yet stay true to your brand. Running through the list will ensure that you are more than halfway prepared for a brand-focused product photoshoot, which will drive the buzz around your products and your brand. Remember, meticulous planning is the key to transferring your ideas to captivating visuals.
